Laccaria amethystea-occidentalis Mueller Cap 1-8cm across, convex becoming umbilicate; deep purple-violet, dull slate-violet to brownish purple or even buff when dry, hygrophanous. Gills adnexed, thick, broad, widely spaced; deep violet. Stem 20-100 x 3-l0mm; purple violet with a violet woolly base; dry, striate. Flesh violet. Odor not distinctive. Taste not distinctive. Spores subglobose, 7.4-10.6 x 6.4-9.2ì; spines up to 1.5µ long. Deposit white. Habitat under conifers (Douglas Fir). Found in western North America. Season August-October. Edible. Comment This species is distinguished from the closely related and eastern Laccaria amethystea (q.v.) by its deeper, more purple colors and more ellipsoid spores. |
